i have been loved before, yes, i will not pretend otherwise, but never like this; never with such patient, almost unreasonable tenderness, the tenderness of a man who goes on tending a garden that has given him, for all his trouble, mostly thorns.

i will tell you honestly how it began, since i see no reason to dress it up as something nobler than it was: it began with his looks. i noticed him the way one notices weather, suddenly, and with no say in the matter, tall, broad-shouldered, built like a man who has spent his life in motion rather than at rest, handsome in that plain, unbothered way that asks nothing of you and yet takes everything. there was a certain strength in the way he carried himself, an ease in his body that i found myself watching before i had even learned his name. i thought, foolishly, that this was the whole of it; that i had simply admired a strong pair of shoulders and would go on my way. i did not yet understand that i had only opened a door, and that something far larger was waiting patiently on the other side of it, in no hurry at all to be noticed.

for it is a slow thing, real love, slower than i ever gave it credit for. it does not arrive in a single evening, however much the poets insist that it does. it arrives the way morning arrives on a long winter night: imperceptibly, and then all at once, so that you cannot say afterward at which hour the dark actually ended. and so it was with him. past the face, past that first easy admiration for a body clearly made for effort and endurance, i began to see the rest of him, and the rest of him was what undid me. i saw that he remained, remained past every one of those small farewells i had hung out without even knowing i was hanging them: past my laughing at what deserved to be taken seriously, past the little walls i build for myself out of anger and half-truths, past that phrase i repeat like a superstition, “i don’t need anything from you,” when what i mean, what i have never once had the courage to say plainly, is that i am afraid; afraid of needing him and being left, afterward, with my hands quite empty.

and still he does not go. he comes instead with flowers, and flowers, and flowers, and flowers. held in those same strong hands, can you imagine how absurd, how wonderful, that anyone should still bring flowers to someone like me, with his hand resting so simply at my back, steady as a man used to holding his ground, and he says “very well” even when i am not ready, and never, not once, has he allowed my hesitation to feel like a debt i owe him.

i confess to you that i am moved by his persistence in a way i have no proper word for. to call it flattering would be to insult it; flattery is a light thing, pleased with itself, and this is something graver, stranger, something that humbles me entirely. it is like watching a man build, day after day, a bridge out to the island where i had shut myself up, knowing perfectly well that by evening i might set the whole thing on fire again out of pure fright. and yet he builds, with the same quiet stamina he seems to bring to everything he does. he goes on building, however long it takes him, however messily i resist being known.

and slowly, so slowly that i can hardly say when it began, i stopped standing at the shore, watching for the moment he would finally take his leave. i began, little by little, to unclench my hands. i began to suspect that “forever,” which i had always taken for a fairy tale invented to comfort children, might simply be the name for this: for the way he falls asleep still holding my hand, his grip loose but never quite letting go, for the way he remembered all the big and small fears i confessed to him once, half in passing, six months ago, for the way that being near him stopped feeling like a cage and started to feel like the first breath a man takes after years of holding it in, without knowing he was holding it at all.

is this what i had been looking for? not the easy, decorative kind of love that asks to be idealised, but the true and everlasting and entirely unglamorous kind, the kind that has seen the whole of me, thorns included, and has chosen, quite simply, to stay and love me fully.

he told me he had known from that very first evening we met. i am only now, at last, beginning to believe him. so thank you, thank you for loving me.

this is a short epilogue; our last conversation, though i confess i no longer feel any urgency to tell him what it did to me, since i have come to understand, slowly and with relief, that he does not care to know.

“soulmate”, “the one true love”

those words don’t mean anything in my life. yet i was not the one who spat them out to the world to hear.

but there it was, the whole of it, said so simply that it took me a moment to feel the weight of it land. he knew too much, he said, as though knowledge were a debt, as though the person i had been was a sentence i could never finish serving. i did not argue.

i have found, since then, that there is a particular kind of grief that does not ask to be spoken aloud, that does not even ask to be understood by the one who caused it. it simply asks to be carried a while, quietly, until it grows lighter on its own, or until it doesn’t. i have decided not to tell him what those words did to me. not out of pride, exactly, though perhaps a little of that too, but because i understand now that telling him would change nothing. a man who cannot look past history is not waiting to be convinced; he has already decided, and all that is left for me is to walk on without saying anything further.

i am again reminded that i have since discovered something i did not have years ago, though i searched for it without knowing what i was searching for: i have found people who love me deeply and truly, as i am, history and all, without conditions attached like small print to the bottom of a promise. what’s to say about his character flaws? so beside a love like that, i find i have no appetite left for chasing what could belet him keep his history, and his hesitation, and his careful accounting of my journeys.

there goes the answer

i realised i do not want any of this. i used to say he could always find a friend in me, but now there is none.

people love to say that they find an anchor in me and so i wonder what the main driver behind that is.

i’m noticing that compassion is one of the greatest forms of love - the way it speaks when it has nothing to prove. it is someone who does not keep a ledger of your unraveling. who does not love you because you are easy, but loves you so they stay when you are not. and patience is that love sitting beside you in the middle of it, not checking the clock.

i have found these. in more than one person. in family who never stop believing in me, friends who never made me earn my keep. in partners who softened and never used my wounds as weapons. and in people who saw my unfolding and did not turn away.

they did not love the best version of me. they loved me. as i was, in my entirety. on heavy mornings and silent nights, all the messy in-between. somehow, that is what made me grow, not from shame nor pressure. just from the steadiness of being loved so wholly, so abundantly. i wanted to become someone worthy of that kind of faith; one that’s helped me blossom in return. thank you for giving me the room to grow alongside you.

how lucky i have been, to find and been found in return, many times.

dear universe
i see when you shower me with love
for that i am grateful

have you seen the movie Past Lives? i had never come across something so beautifully written and depicted.

i’ve been sitting with the different ways people come to know me. not all at once. very rarely in the same language. some arrive like a hand on a doorframe: steady, patient, asking nothing. others come as laughter that stays in the room long after they leave, as small exchanges that weigh more than their words, as a flicker behind the eyes that says i see you before i even speak.

somewhere in the middle of all these unspoken things, i’ve been reminded that to be loved is to be known. and what a strange and tender thing it is, to be seen with such certainty, as if the shape of me has already been drawn, as if every corner has already been visited. i almost smile at the thought, because i know how much of me still lives in the shadows just beyond that reach. still, there is something gentle in it, in the way people hold onto their version of you with such ease.

maybe some things about me have changed, maybe everything has. in between what is known and what remains untouched, i’ve noticed a difference: not in how i am seen, but in how i hold myself. less like a locked door. less like a question waiting to be answered. i realised i do not need to be fully understood to be deeply felt. like rain on a window. like a name spoken in a dream.

i have left an imprint on everyone. a ghost of myself in the rooms they keep.

i have always been the one to leave, to pack my suitcase and move halfway across the world. i was never one to bear the responsibility of saying goodbye because i know i will find my way back, i know you will see me again. this time, it is now my turn to stay still whilst the other leaves. the writer has come out of hiding only to find herself at a loss for words.

where do i even start? i am still in denial. time waits for no one. the clock is ticking and the date is approaching yet here i am scraping for words to say. i am in utter disbelief that this chapter will end soon, so it coincides with the lunar new year. my best friend, the best thing that has ever happened to me in the entirety of my expatriate journey, is leaving to come home, after a long 9 years. i am incredibly excited for her to embark on this new journey, close to everything that defined who she is, and next to her fiancé.

undernearth all the happiness and bursts of gratitude i feel, there lies sadness, fear, and anxiety. i will forever mourn the loss of not living in the same continent as her. i learnt that proximity is a privilege.

two months later and it has felt like forever

lately, i feel like i don’t have the luxury of time. everything keeps moving: people, days, the quiet hours that slip away before i notice. yet here i am, standing still. i keep running into crossroads, thinking one path might lead me forward, but somehow, each one circles back to the places i’ve already been.

sometimes i revisit my past, retracing steps like a detective trying to find where the story went wrong. it feels like i’ve been here before, with different faces, different stories, but the same thing repackaged. i wonder if i missed something in between: a moment, a sign, a truth that could’ve spared me the ache of learning everything the hard way.

i keep thinking i’ve grown past it, that i’ve learned what i needed to. was there some other lesson i was supposed to learn, some sign i was meant to see?

so then the roads blur again. maybe that’s just what healing really is: the endless circling back until you finally stop (i mean, really stop) repeating the same patterns.

but was it really my fault being born as my mother's daughter? the world is a dangerous place for a hopeless romantic.

now i have to spend my whole life unlearning it.. is somebody gonna match my freak?

i wrote this in honor of missing canberra. it’s miraculous how such a small city can lead me into knowing, growing, and traveling together with beautiful souls. i am teary.

i often wonder how differently my life would look like if i didn’t choose to study at ANU. but that also means losing the opportunity to get to know these people and for that i will forever be grateful choosing what i chose.

aaaanyway—despite all the ups and downs of this year, we’ve finally made it august! think the biggest and sweetest surprise of 2025 for me is traveling to india to attend one of my closest friends’ wedding. thanks to bahjat for making me his +1 on that diwali party back in 2020, who could’ve known we’ll be life-long besties? one thing about life is that it’ll never fail to surprise you!

this trip showed me how spontaneous i could be. every decision was made on the go and i wouldn’t have it any other way! by the time i left sydney, the only thing i had booked is these return flights—nothing else.

i flew to delhi with a transit in singapore. my first flight got delayed so i spent my layover to run between terminals and changi is HUGE! did a rookie mistake of not reading signs properly because i really could’ve taken that sky train fr #adhd. i finally landed close to midnight and at this point my soul had left my body. had another drama with

hi!!!

it's been a while and there's been too many things unfolding in the first quarter of the year phewwwww. i've moved over to Sydney and currently struggling with setting up new routines #movingtoanewcitything. i don't remember the last time i journaled omg. makes me feel so knotted up. yet whenever i have a bit of free time, journaling is the least thing I wanna do, smh.

Sydney has been so warm, and interesting, and... really different from Canberra. you wouldn't really know the place without truly living in it and despite my numerous trips to Syd i just never thought it would be this different. weirdly enough when you feel out of place (adjusting to a new city), suddenly you miss all these other places you've been in where you created memories. i've missed the quiet, cold, sunny morning of docklands - Canberra and its beautiful skies, plus my hiking trails - my fur babies in m city, and i even miss Darwin's breathtaking sunset. i looked back and realised how far my two feet have taken me - and i am so grateful <3

currently in the middle of one of the most hectic times of the year and here i am procrastinating, and trying to update this dusty blog. hope everyone reading this is having a better time, so i can live vicariously through you!!

love, S

in that quiet moment, something shifted—your eyes—those who’s seen the harsh truth of the world—softened, and for the first time, i felt truly seen. the years of distance dissolved, like shadows fading into dawn, and there was light at the end of the tunnel. i melted into your arms with tears running down my face. you understood the struggles i’ve been having in silence, the baggage weighing down my shoulders. and you saw the duality in me: the child seeking comfort and the adult lost in life’s uncertainties.

“it’s going to be okay, my child”

the moment i realised i am just my dad’s daughter

carry the weight of it all: the unspoken expectations, the quiet sacrifices. i search for meaning in the spaces between, but it slips away like shadows in the dusk. i long to live for myself, yet guilt binds me, tethered to the ones who raised me. their dreams linger in my veins, a constant pulse beneath my skin. i want to give them the world, even as my own slips through my fingers.
